Should you pursue a career in technology sales?
It’s no secret that the technology industry is one of the fastest-growing industries in the world, and a career in this industry can be exciting and fulfilling. However, most individuals without technical backgrounds are hesitant to step into this industry, thinking they are not ‘techie’ enough. In reality, there are plenty of roles you can pursue in this field – with or without technical skills, and one of the best options out there is technology sales.
As you can probably tell, technology sales is all about selling technology. Depending on the company you’re working for, this can encompass hardware such as laptops and mobile devices, or software such as Salesforce and tech services. Technology sales, in a nutshell, is getting to know the consumers (which could be individuals or other businesses), building relationships, and helping them solve their problems.
By now, you’re probably wondering why you should even start a career in technology sales. There are plenty of reasons that make this a particularly appealing career path, but here are the top 5 reasons to consider.
1. High demand for technology sales professionals
As technology continues to become even more prevalent in our day-to-day lives, companies are likely to hire more and more customer-facing roles that liaise with customers and translate their products into revenue. Considering the process of selling by way of cultivating relationships and building trust cannot be automated, there will always be demand for technology sales professionals.
2. Career growth opportunities
Just like a typical sales career, technology sales professionals have plenty of career growth potential. There are many different roles on a technology sales team that you can consider pursuing. This includes business development, account executives, sales leads, team managers, and more.
On top of that, the technology industry spans various sectors; for example, IT, BioTech, EdTech, FinTech, and MarTech. This means, once you have gained the necessary soft skills to sell technical products and work with clients, you can transition to any of these technology sectors with little to no training required.
3. Job security & lucrative compensation
The technology industry’s growth shows no signs of slowing down, and the sheer wealth and economic influence of this industry means there is always money in technology sales as well as job security. While the technology industry is known to offer high compensation to professionals who fill the more technical roles, there is no doubt you can earn a great living in sales as well.
4. Opportunity to network
As a technology sales professional, you are required to build long-term relationships with an array of clients. While this can be an incredibly rewarding experience, these relationships can also lead to a larger professional network which in turn lead you to more opportunities – be it sales or personal growth.
5. Learning & keeping up with new technologies
When working as a sales technology professional, you will need to know the ins and outs of the tech products or services that the company sells. While this can be challenging, you will also be the first to sample the latest technologies and hear about new directions for the technology industry. As you develop this technical understanding and skillset, you will be able to find not only new sales opportunities but may also get the chance to manage your own team one day.
