Senior Director, Data Centre Design Management

Job description

One of the world's largest data centre service providers is looking for a dynamic Senior Director, Design Management to lead the design development of all greenfield new data centre setup projects across the Asia Pacific region. This position reports to the Global VP, Strategic Planning & Design.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Formulate and determine the business and functional direction and in line with the strategies, plans and targets of the company
  • Monitor project budgets, ensuring adherence to financial constraints, tracking expenses, and implementing cost-saving measures without compromising the quality of deliverables
  • Develop comprehensive engineering plans that define scope, objectives, timelines, resources, and deliverables, ensuring alignment with cross-functional teams to achieve seamless execution
  • Assigning projects and tasks to individual Design Managers, monitoring their progress and ensuring alignment with project budgets and schedules
  • Collaborate when needed to discuss new process efficiencies and/or new products and/or data centre configurations
  • Review appropriateness of design based on locality specifics, convention, local experience, climate, workforce and existing standards
  • Ensuring compliance with the company standards on all projects and assure that these standards are up-to-date with industry best practices and meet the company's business objectives
  • Lead the review, development and implementation of formal procedures and policies, covering all aspects of the unit's operations including the methodology and approach of the planning and execution of projects to result in effective and efficient project delivery and governance
  • Assist in the preparation and review of budgets and forecasts related to anticipated design and construction expenditures
  • Develop and maintain vendor relationships (Contractors, Architects, Engineers, Consultants, etc.) to provide cost-effective services for data centres projects
  • Lead and direct the procurement and management of externals consultants and project manager and ensure that the required levels of competence are embedded within all consultants appointed
  • Ensure the development is in full adherence with all company's SOPs and governance manuals, whether technical design, group risk, construction, insurance, or others
  • Communicate status of projects to both internal and external stakeholders on an ad-hoc and formal basis. Ensure all stakeholders are up-to-date with regards to design schedule and potential issues. Prepare monthly project reports regarding the budget, schedule, and scope objectives of assigned projects


Key Requirements:

  • Tertiary qualification in Electrical/Electronics Engineering, Architecture or equivalent
  • Minimum fifteen years of experience in designing critical facilities and complex infrastructure
  • Prior experience handling the design of data centres is ideal
  • Strong working acumen with CSA and MEP systems development; Architectural, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering education or experience is a plus.
  • Strong knowledge of construction methodologies, building codes, safety regulations, and industry best practices
  • Strong technical knowledge with hands-on knowledge/experience and understanding of risk management and critical systems operations, including HVAC, Standby emergency power, uninterruptible power supplies, and associated infrastructure
  • Good understanding of engineering principles and best practices
  • Proven experience implementing processes in rapid growth environments and operating in compliance with global regulations
  • Skilled in creating collaborative environments, organizing meetings, and possessing strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders
  • Able to work autonomously, be self-driven and not reliant on others
  • Able to adapt yourself well in various international settings for long periods of time
  • Able to resolve conflicts, visionary and possess the foresight to plan ahead for the business
  • Fluency in English and Japanese (at least N3)
